In 2014, Nevada State College broke ground for the James E. & Beverly Rogers Student Center and the Nursing, Science & Education Building,  and a presidential initiative authorized the creation of the Office of Arts & Culture. The first arts initiative was to curate an art collection for the campus and community featuring the work of local artists.  The NSC Permanent Collection contains 71 works by 34 local artists.

In February 2015 the NSC Arts & Culture Council — made up of faculty, staff, students, and alumni — sent out a call for art submissions based on the vision created through campus discussions.  The following ideas developed as inspiration for the call:

  • The NSC Art Collection as a community-based initiative to support and promote the work of local artists
  • The histories of: NSC, the workforce in Southern Nevada, and Education
  • The beauty and preservation of the natural landscape surrounding NSC and within the region
  • The power of space for reflection and healing, human kindness and healing around the world
  • Murals and sculptures reflecting the region
  • Artwork depicting NSC's mascot (Scotty the Scorpion)
  • Digital and interactive art
  • Science-based artwork, STEAM-based work
  • Intellectual curiosity

Ed Fuentes, NSC class of 2015, is regionally known as an advocate for public art for his coverage on the art and politics of muralism. Fuentes’ interests lie in enlarging an understanding of public art in the West. As a 2013 grantee for The Creative Capital Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant Program, he started Paint This Desert to survey the direct relationship between murals and public art as well as the intersections with online media and culture in Western communities.

 Gig Depio
A Requiem for the Outsiders
Oil on canvas
2014

On loan from the artist

Gig Depio is a 2015 recipient of an artist fellowship through the Nevada Arts Council. He graduated from Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines and worked for several years as an apprentice to his father, Gig C De Pio. Depio is a painter and an advocate for public art in Las Vegas. He believes that it is an artist’s obligation to give, that an artist must pay it forward to the community by striving to make great art — a heroic gesture from the humility of labor, through which large and difficult things inspire people to work together to live better lives in their own communities.
