What is GEAR UP?

GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Program)

is a discretionary grant program that is designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. GEAR UP provides six-year grants to states and partnerships to provide services at high-poverty middle and high schools. GEAR UP grantees serve an entire cohort of students beginning no later than the seventh grade and follow the cohort through high school. GEAR UP funds are also used to provide college scholarships to low-income students.

Nevada State GEAR UP GOALS are to...

1.  Increase academic performance and preparation for postsecondary education.

2.  Increase high school graduation rate and participation in postsecondary education.

3.  Increase student and parent/family knowledge of postsecondary education options, preparation, and financing.

4.  Create a college-going culture in GEAR UP middle schools to ensure that all students have the opportunity, support, guidance, and information to obtain the skills and succeed in postsecondary education.
