Withdrawal Petitions

The Student Success Team within the Academic Advising Center (AAC) manages the review and decision making process of various withdrawal petitions at Nevada State.  Please see below for additional information.  If you have questions, please contact 702-992-2160 and ask to speak to someone about withdrawal petitions.

Medical Withdrawal Petition (partial or full):  A Full or Partial Medical Withdrawal is granted when the College determines that a student’s health, safety, and academic success have been compromised by a mental or physical health condition.  This petition is only applicable after the deadline to take a “W” grade within a semester has passed.  For complete details of the policy, please click here.  For access to the online petition form, please click here.

Common Outcomes: Petitions approved through this process typically result in “W” grades being assigned to the impacted course(s), the petition must be submitted within six-months after the end of the semester in question, and no refund will be awarded.

Military Withdrawal Petition:  In accordance with federal law, students who are deployed or otherwise are called to active duty for military obligations shall not face academic hardship with regard to grades, and in some cases, tuition finances.  If you are placed on orders during the semester and are unable to continue to attend for the semester, please complete this form.  However, in some cases it may be in the best interest of the student to complete a student absence notification request, especially if the activation is less than 14 days and/or the student believes they can continue to be successful in their coursework for the semester.  For complete information regarding the military leave policy, click here.  To request a military withdrawal, please click here.  For the student absence notification request, click here.

Common Outcomes: Students who need to withdraw for the semester due to military obligations typically do not receive any grade and are completely withdrawn for the semester.  However, other options exist in accordance with the Student Military Leave Policy linked above.  Additionally, a refund is often available depending on the circumstances.  Please see the policy linked in the description above for more information.

Late Withdrawal Petition:  A late withdrawal request applies only when the deadline to take a “W” grade within the current semester has passed and the student believes that extenuating circumstances exist.  Or, if the semester in question has already ended and a student is retroactively petitioning for “W” grades within one year from the end of the term in question.  See the academic calendar for specific deadline details related to “W” grades.  Click here to access the petition.

Extenuating circumstances include but are not limited to: Death or incapacitation resulting from an illness or injury of the student’s spouse, child, parent, or legal guardian that prevents the student from returning to the school for the remainder of the semester; Involuntary job transfer outside of the service area of the institution as documented by employer; or Other exceptional circumstance beyond the control of the institution or the student. Circumstances that will not be considered include, but are not limited to:

  • Not attending class(es)
  • Finding the course(s) too difficult
  • Personally disliking the course(s) or instructor
  • Not being able to log into MyNSC to drop/withdraw
  • Changes in work schedule

Common Outcomes: Petitions approved through this process typically result in “W” grades being assigned to the impacted course(s), the petition must be submitted within six-months after the end of the semester in question, and no refund will be awarded.
