Liberal Arts Majors at NSC

Liberal Arts Majors

The School of Liberal Arts & Sciences at NSC houses most majors and minors offered by the College.  For a complete list of LAS majors, please see the NSC catalog or check out the School of LAS website.  As a liberal arts and sciences student, you will develop a broad base of understanding that will BE VITAL to your future endeavors. You’ll have access to individual advising, tutoring and writing help, and career services to help you launch a career and a deeper life.  Because there are so many majors that fall under the School of LAS, the AAC distributes majors amongst Advising Teams as follows:

Undecided?  That’s okay!

There is room in your LAS degree to help you explore which major is right for you.  Make sure to use your resources, like Career Services, and talk to your Academic Advisor about your interests—we can help you to determine which major is a good fit to help you reach your goals.

Note: if you are receiving financial aid, you must declare your major by the time you earn 60 credits to continue receiving aid.

Most of NSC’s minors, which are optional additions to your degree plan to consider, also fall under the School of LAS.  For a full list of minors offered, please see the NSC catalog.

A minor is like a “mini-major.”  A minor is a grouping of classes around a specific subject matter, typically between 18-24 credits.  A minor must be combined with a major/degree program.  Most times, students will choose a minor that complements their major area of study.  For example, a student majoring in Psychology may be inclined to minor in Counseling (emphasis in Addiction, Treatment, & Prevention) if their ultimate career goal is to become a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor.  Students who major in English may be interested in adding a minor in Creative Writing simply because it allows them to explore a different part of their major field of study and because it may give them a creative outlet that they would enjoy exploring alongside their major field of study.  Minors are completely optional but can have a wide range of benefits for students who choose to pursue them alongside their majors.  Advisors on any team in the AAC can discuss minor possibilities with you and elaborate on their respective requirements.

Students may even pursue more than one major (or more than one minor!) if desired.  If you’re considering adding multiple majors or minors to your degree plan, we strongly suggest scheduling an advising appointment.
