Dr. Vickie Shields is the Provost and Executive Vice President at Nevada State College where she is responsible for establishing the academic vision of the institution and ensuring the quality of academic programs and student support services.
The Southern Nevada community has embraced her leadership since moving here in June 2017. She has been awarded two prestigious honors: in 2018 she was honored as a “Woman to Watch in Las Vegas,” by Greenspun Media and Vegas Inc. magazine, and in 2019 she was awarded the coveted, “Iconic Woman of Distinction Award” in the category of Education by the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO).
Vickie is a first-generation college student who grew up in the Boise valley of Idaho. She has served as a faculty member in Communication and Media Studies, Director of a Women’s Studies Program, Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences, and Dean of Social Sciences and Social Work at two prior Universities. She is the former President of the Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences (CCAS), the leading national organization of arts and sciences deans.
Vickie received her M.A. and PhD degrees from the Ohio State University where she was awarded The Ohio State University Presidential Fellowship for demonstrating outstanding scholarly accomplishment and potential. Her B.A. is from Boise State University who named her BSU Alumna of the Year in 2005. In that same year she completed the Management Development Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Dr. Shields is an internationally known scholar in Feminist Media Studies and the author of Measuring Up: How Advertising Affects Self Image, a winner of best book by the Visual Communication Division of the National Communication Association. She is the proud recipient of numerous teaching and scholarship awards and honors.
