Are you a first-generation student?
At Nevada State, we define “first-generation” as:
- students who are part of the first-generation of their family to attend college
OR
- students whose parents/caregivers attended college but did not complete an Associate’s degree or higher
OR
- students whose parents/caregivers attended a college in a country outside the United States where the degree is not recognized within the United States.
Some of the programs at Nevada State that support first-generation students include:
Nepantla Program
Our Nepantla program allows first-generation students to take classes at no charge during the summer before their first semester. After the summer bridge, Nepantla students receive additional advising and participate in several community activities throughout their college journey
TRiO-SSS
Our TRiO-SSS (Student Support Services) Program offers extra advising, academic support, and financial support for students who are accepted. To apply, you need to be (1) A student with low-income; (2) A first generation college student; or (3) A student with a disability.
First-gen Forward
Nevada State is a proud participant in the First-Gen Forward program, which challenges colleges to explore new and innovative ways of supporting first-generation students. The program is sponsored by Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA).
Division of Culture, Planning, and Policy
Our Division of Culture, Planning, and Policy is committed to helping all members of the Nevada State community feel a true sense of belonging and purpose. We support many initiatives specifically designed for first-generation students, including an annual First-Generation Student Mixer.
