Nevada State College is holding a contest to create the first-ever fight song for the state’s only four-year public college. Nevada State has an alma mater (college anthem), but it does not have an official fight song, leading President Bart Patterson to initiate the call for submissions.

The contest is open to all Nevada State College students, faculty, staff, and alumni; currently registered undergraduate, graduate, or professional school students at any of Nevada System of Higher Education institutions; and the general public. Individuals or teams of no more than two individuals are encouraged to submit. Entries are due by Sept. 1, 2019.

The fight song should be 30 to 45 seconds in length and should consider including some of the following words: Scorpion or Scorpions, Black, Gold, Nevada State College, Mt. Scorpion, Pride, Bold. The song should be creative and high energy with an inspiring and positive message to capture Nevada State’s promise and values along with Scorpion pride. All submitted work must be original and must not include, be based on, or derived from any copyrighted music or lyrics.

The winner will be announced and the first-ever official fight song will debut during the college’s 2019 Spirit Week, which will be held Sept. 16-20. The winner will receive $2,000. The runner(s)-up may also be awarded $500 stipends at the discretion of the College.

A committee comprised of faculty, staff, students, and community members will select the top three entries, which will then be submitted to the student body for a vote. The final decision will be made by the President and Executive Team.
