The Nevada State College chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, an international honor society in education, was honored to have Dr. Linda Archambault, the 2012 Met/Life/NASSP National Middle level Principal of the Year, speak at their January meeting. Archambault is the principal of R. O. Gibson Middle School in Las Vegas and is the first individual from Nevada to receive this distinguished award. As a supporter of the Kappa Delta Pi officers and members, Archambault was eager to share her journey and inspiration with future leaders in education.
During the Kappa Delta Pi event, Archambault captivated the room of approximately 45 attendees by speaking of her passion for her school and her commitment to the students, staff, school and community. Five years ago, when Archambault became the principal of R. O. Gibson, she recognized that the school was in great need of leadership and vast academic improvements. Drawing on the school’s staff and community members, the school’s environment was first revamped into one of a safe and compassionate setting. Then, with a focus on individual student needs, staff collaboration and accountability for student outcomes, the school began to advance and reach academic goals and standards.
Archambault emphasized to the Kappa Delta Pi members the importance of recognizing that all students have individual needs and teachers need to make dedicated efforts to meet each one. The society members were challenged to begin incorporating a range of student activities into their own schools and classrooms including a school-wide exercise that ensures all students are personally included in a school community.
The Nevada State College Kappa Delta Pi chapter faculty advisor is Roberta Kaufman. The group meets on a regular basis to connect with educators in the community and discuss current topics in education for all grade levels.
