Board of Regents appoints Bart Patterson as President of Nevada State College

By Mandi Enger
Bart Patterson was named President of Nevada State College during a special session of the Board of Regents on April 30, 2012. Serving as the interim president of the college since November 1, 2011, Patterson is the seventh individual to assume the leadership role since the college’s inception in 2002.
I am proud to continue my work at Nevada State College as the institution is truly impacting the lives of our students and the community we serve, shared Patterson. As the college advances into its next phase, I plan to work with my team and community partners to concentrate on student success, economic development, expanding physical facilities, diversity initiatives and fundraising.
The presidential search process neared conclusion during the week of April 23 as five presidential candidates visited the NSC campus to introduce themselves to NSC stakeholder groups including faculty, staff, students, administration, and community members. Candidates then met with the board’s search committee Friday, April 27 for their final interviews.
The committee’s decision to recommend Patterson came late Friday evening and was met with overwhelming support by the full board the following Monday.
“Bart has demonstrated a deep commitment to our mission and to an inclusive, yet decisive, decision making style that has built our trust,” said Robin Herlands, assistant professor of biology, after learning of Patterson’s appointment. “He has built a strong rapport with our campus community and we believe he will accelerate and enhance our progress as an institution.”
Serving within the Nevada System of Higher Education since 2001, Patterson was most recently the vice chancellor of administrative and legal affairs prior to accepting the position of interim president followed by president. He has additionally served as an adjunct instructor at NSC teaching public policy courses. Patterson received his law degree from Duke University School of Law in North Carolina.
Mr. Patterson’s dedication to higher education and NSC initiatives is inspiring to me as a student and member of the Nevada State Student Alliance, said Deuvall Dorsey, the student government president at NSC. He has shown a true interest in assisting our student organizations and I’m glad we’ll be working closely with him moving forward.
Patterson will address the campus and community supporters for the first time in his official role during the college’s May 11 commencement ceremony.
