Nevada State College first to offer Speech-Language Pathology master’s degree in Southern Nevada

Nevada State College announces the accreditation of their Speech-Language Pathology master’s degree program, the first in Southern Nevada.
The Speech-Language Pathology master’s degree program aims to equip and empower effective speech-language pathologists to serve as practitioners and researchers to meet the needs of individuals, families and caregivers impacted by communication and swallowing disorders.

“We are proud at Nevada State College to offer the only Speech-Language Pathology master’s degree in Southern Nevada,” said Bart Patterson, president of Nevada State College. “Speech-Language Pathology is a critical need in many schools in Clark County and throughout Nevada. We are honored that Nevada State College can provide qualified and knowledgeable pathologists who can help make an impact in the community.”

The program currently has 53 students enrolled, taught by faculty who bring a wealth of clinical and research experience from many diverse settings; schools, hospitals, nursing homes, home health, and rehabilitation. The curriculum and clinical training prepares each student to serve children and adults in areas of language disorders, speech sound disorders, stuttering, swallowing disorders, cognitive impairments, and those who use augmentative and alternative communication.

“At the end of the Speech-Language Pathology master’s program, students will have the ability to work together with other industry professionals to help provide the best care and support for individuals with communication disorders at all stages in their lives,” said Dennis Potthoff, dean of the School of Education at Nevada State College.

Applications for the Fall 2020 program are currently being accepted. All application materials are due by Jan. 15, 2020.

The master’s degree program in Speech-Language Pathology at Nevada State College is a Candidate for Accreditation by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. This is a “pre-accreditation” status with the CAA, awarded to developing or emerging programs for a maximum period of five years.
