For NSC freshman Natividad Fong, the beginning of the Fall 2010 school year was cause for much celebration. Ms. Fong, a recent graduate of Eldorado High School, was the proud recipient of a 2010 Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Las Vegas Scholarship.
To pursue a college degree means a lot to me, said Ms. Fong. I will be the one person in my family to accomplish the goal of getting a higher education, said Ms. Fong, who is a freshman working towards a degree in Elementary Education.
The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Las Vegas Scholarship Program (RMHC) is collaboration amongst RMHC, McDonald’s and various community organizations, with the mission to provide financial assistance to students with limited access to career and educational opportunities. This year, RMHC awarded $272,000 to ninety-eight high school students, with over 2 million in scholarship funds to students in Clark and Nye County since 1999. Fong’s scholarship was provided through HACER (Hispanic American Commitment to Education Resources), one of the four RMHC scholarships programs. The RMHC scholarship grants Ms. Fong a monetary award of $1,000 to be used toward her educational expenses at NSC.
I have always had a desire and interest to work with children, so working toward a degree in Education would be a natural fit for me, said Ms. Fong. Looking forward to giving back to her community, Ms. Fong’s aspirations are to eventually apply to the Teacher-Prep program in the School of Education at NSC as she progresses in her studies.
My ultimate goal is to teach at one of the Clark County School District Elementary Schools, she shared.
Referring to the importance of receiving an education at NSC, Ms. Fong sites this scholarship as being an affirmation of her hard work throughout high school. Looking forward to her years at NSC, she is optimistic about what lies ahead. Obtaining a college degree will open the door to a better future for me as well as my family, and this scholarship will help me get closer to that!
