Nevada State College is proud to announce Magdalena Perez-Heywood as the recipient of the 2009 Silver State Schools Credit Union Scholarship. Ms. Perez-Heywood is a sophomore studying to receive her degree in Mathematics with an emphasis in Secondary Education at NSC.
I am studying to become a teacher because I care about other people. I know I can make a difference in people’s lives, especially in the Hispanic community of Southern Nevada.
The Silver State Schools Credit Union (SSSCU) Scholarship is presented annually to students seeking a baccalaureate degree in education at NSC. The SSSCU scholarship affords Ms. Perez-Heywood a monetary award of $5,000 to go toward her educational expenses.
When I found out I had been awarded the SSSCU Scholarship I was excited and relieved because I no longer had to worry about how I would pay for my classes. This scholarship allows me to focus all of my attention on my educational goals.
Ms. Perez-Heywood cites her persistence and positive attitude as being an integral part of what makes her a successful student today and a successful professional tomorrow. She also shares that NSC professors have been a continual source of inspiration in the classroom as well as what kind of teacher she can be in the future. When I become a teacher, I want to be as passionate as my professors at NSC have been.
It can be said Ms. Perez-Heywood is paying forward that inspiration and passion for learning she has received during her education at NSC. She shares, as a student, I try to communicate my love for learning to my classmates and those around me. As a teacher, I’ll strive to transmit my values and love for learning to my students.
