HOW TO SUCCEED IN ONLINE CLASSES

To keep everyone safe, we’ve moved many of our classes to a remote format. While this may be a different way of taking classes for some, you can still learn a lot from our experienced instructors, who know how to be engaging in any format. Here are some resources to help:

UNDERSTANDING CLASS FORMATS

Classes this fall will be offered in several formats, including synchronous online, asynchronous online, and hybrid. We encourage all students to reach out to their instructors via Canvas with questions about how that specific class will work.

  • Asynchronous classes do not require you to use software to meet with the instructor/class at a specific time. Assignments are completed entirely online. These classes will not have any times or dates listed on the schedule.
  • Synchronous classes are also online but will require you to meet with the instructor/class at specific times and dates using video conference software such as Zoom. When you look at the class schedule online, you’ll see that these classes have dates and times listed (e.g. MoWe 12:30PM – 1:50PM). To participate in this class, you’ll need to be able to meet with the instructor/class virtually during these times.
  • Hybrid courses will require you to meet in-person on campus, but less frequently than a traditional in-person course. A significant portion of the course will be completed online. You’ll recognize these courses because “Hybrid” is listed under the instruction method column of the online class schedule. You should plan on coming to campus on the dates and times listed, although the instructor may choose to modify the schedule for safety concerns. For example, for a hybrid course that meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11-12:20, you may be asked to only attend one day a week.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I can’t log into Canvas. I tried resetting my password but I’m not getting the email.
It’s possible that you may be going to the wrong Canvas site. To access our instance you should go through the NSC Portal at https://my.nsc.edu, where you can click on the Canvas link which will single sign them onto the platform. Alternatively, you can go directly to https://webcampus.nsc.edu. In both cases, you can use your standard NSC credentials (NSHE ID) to log in.

How do I get a student ID this semester?

The ID card office is open for walk-ins M-F 8am-4pm on the second floor of the RSC building. Alternatively, IDs can be requested using this link. Once submitted we will print the cards and notify you when they are available for pickup.

How do I log onto WiFi?

    • Select the wireless network labeled “NSC Secure” on your wireless device
    • Enter your NSC username/password and connect
    • If prompted with a certificate warning select “Trust” or “Connect”
