Good afternoon Nevada State College Community,
In light of last night’s tragic events at Michigan State University, I wanted to take a moment to share training opportunities offered by University Police Services, Southern Command (UPD). UPD hosts free Active Assailant presentations multiple times throughout the year with the goal of reaching as many community members as possible. These presentations offer awareness tips and tools should an active assailant situation arise. All students, staff, faculty, and NSHE community members are always welcome to join in any available session. Additionally, you can request a presentation for your department or class through our Community Outreach request form on our website.
With that, I wanted to let you all know that we are offering a free virtual active assailant presentation tomorrow, Wednesday, February 15, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. via Webex. If you, a colleague, or students you know are interested in attending this presentation, please register here. You will receive further instructions on video conference login upon registration.
I believe that awareness and education are among the best tools to ensure personal safety. In addition, personal emergency planning is vital when situations like this occur. Remember to be aware of your environment, be familiar with exits in your area, ask about building emergency action plans, and participate in the NS Alert notification system.
I also urge everyone to review the contact information on file, as UPD will send timely text notifications in the event of a campus emergency. Further, I encourage you to download the State Safe app, which is available either through the iTunes or the Google Play store. This app provides students, employees, faculty, and community members access to many public safety resources, including but not limited to, requesting a late-night security escort, real-time chat with UPD Dispatch personnel, reporting a crime in progress or suspicious activities, and submitting anonymous crime tips.
