MEMORANDUM
DATE: February 11, 2010
TO: Nevada State College Community
RE:  Budget Update
You may have heard rumors that Nevada State College is closing. I am informing you that these rumors have no basis in fact. We are all aware of the state’s and, by extension, the system of higher education’s budget difficulties. Those problems will impact Nevada State as well as our sister institutions. But, there is no indication that closing NSC will be part of the system’s response to the state’s fiscal difficulties.
During the special session which begins on February 23, the legislature will likely be charged with balancing the state’s budget. From that process will emerge a definitive number by which NSHE must reduce its budget. On the assumption that the special session completes before the March 4-5 Board of Regents meeting, the Regents would then approve a budget reduction plan. Until that time, no statements regarding the impact of the reductions on any institution have veracity.
I am proud that the faculty and staff of Nevada State College have built an institution that is fulfilling its mission of providing access to a bachelor’s education to the citizens of Nevada, particularly first generation and low-income students. The College’s success is evidenced by its dramatic enrollment growth (20%) this year and the achievements of our graduates.
I will continue to keep you informed as the budget process continues.
Sincerely,
Fred Maryanski
President
