New Faculty: Gwen Sharp, Ph.D.

Beginning in fall 2007, Gwen Sharp will serve Nevada State College as Assistant Professor of Sociology.
Sharp received her masters University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Department of Sociology in 2001. She joined the Department of History and Sociology at Southern Utah University as an Assistant Professor and received her Ph.D. in 2005.
Sharp has maintained an active research agenda, her interests include race relations and immigration processes, and she is conducting a study of undocumented Hispanic workers in Iron County, Utah. She will soon begin a research project interviewing water diviner and focus on the way diviners and government hydrologists use scientific/rational language to validate their belief systems while disparaging each other.
Sharp is a generalist in the area of sociology, but her particular areas of interest include race and ethnicity, immigration, gender, food cultures, urban and rural sociology, and qualitative methods.
