As Nevada State College (NSC) works to consolidate its campus through the construction of two new buildings, the institution has announced that the previously approved special building fee will be deferred for students enrolled during the 2013-2014 academic year. The special building fee will also be reduced by approximately 50% in the following year.
Based on action of the Board of Regents and the Nevada Legislature, $1.2 million from estate tax funds has been allocated to the NSC campus development plans, said NSC Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration Buster Neel. Estate tax funds are primarily used for capital projects and we’re pleased that NSC has received this support for such a vital project in our growth.
The two campus buildings, a combined nursing and education facility, and a student activities and administration building, are planned to be constructed on NSC’s developing 509-acre campus in Henderson with a groundbreaking as early as December 2013.
Financing for the project will additionally utilize repurposed funds from existing building leases in downtown Henderson as NSC plans to consolidate its operations to the main campus upon completion of the new buildings.
The entire student body is very excited about the construction of the new buildings, said Arianni Valencia, a representative of the Nevada State Student Alliance (NSSA). As NSSA Chair of Capital Improvement, it is great to see NSC expanding and the college’s vision becoming a reality.
The campus development plans and associated special building fee were originally approved by a vast majority of NSC students in a 2011 campus-wide survey.
The Board of Regents has additionally approved the expansion of the project to 120,000 square-feet, 20,000 square-feet above the original plans. NSC will present to the Nevada Legislature Interim Finance Committee for approval on the project expansion on Thursday, Aug. 29.
Our hope is for the additional space to be added as a third floor on the student activities and administrative building, added Neel. Student representation will be included as planning for the space is finalized.
NSC will present final financing plans to the Board of Regents during the Sept. meeting to be held in Elko, Nev. The plans will then go before the State of Nevada Board of Finance and Board of Examiners for final approval.
