Remembering Our Scorpions

It is with profound sadness that I write with news of Nevada State College’s direct connections to the devastating mass shooting that occurred on October 1st. We are a tight-knit campus community and when one person is hurt, we all are. Please understand that the aftermath of this tragic event is still unfolding and there may be further updates. As of now, I share the following information with a heavy heart. Two Nevada State alumni, Charleston Hartfield and Cameron Robinson, are confirmed among the deceased.
Reports on those who were injured continue to come in. Freshman Rylie Golgart is confirmed among those with a serious injury. Shot in the lower back, she is continuing to undergo treatment. To assist Rylie’s family with the mounting medical bills, please give to:
UPDATE: We have learned that Nevada State College pre-nursing major Maggie Lange also suffered a gunshot wound at the October 1 mass shooting. She is awaiting surgery to remove the bullet. To support her recovery, please give to:
I know we all are in pain, and searching for ways to deal with our grief and pay our respects. The Nevada State Student Alliance will hold a candlelight vigil at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 10, on the Nevada State College campus. There is also consideration of a more formal memorial ceremony at a later date, contingent on the wishes of the families. An online remembrance book has been set up for members of Nevada State and the greater community to share their thoughts, stories, and photos in celebration of the lives of Charleston and Cameron. To join in, please visit: Remembering Cameron & Remembering Charleston.
On behalf of the entire college, I extend our deepest condolences to the Hartfield and Robinson families, and I wish the very best to Rylie and her family as she begins on the road to recovery. In addition, we know many of you had family or friends who were injured or killed in this terrible incident. They all remain in our thoughts and hearts as we try to come to grips with the enormity of what has been lost. If you are aware of other current or former students impacted by this tragedy, please contact Associate Dean Gwen Sharp at (702) 992-2645 or
My thoughts are with all of you.
