Henderson, Nev. The City of Henderson and Henderson Development Association honored Nevada State College President Fred Maryanski at their eighth annual Economic Development Awards program Jan. 4 for his impact on Henderson’s economy. The recipient of the 2006 O Callaghan Public Sector Person of the Year Award, Maryanski was recognized for his innovative approach at Nevada State College, which led to partnerships with various private and public entities in an effort to offer a wide range of baccalaureate programs and selected masters programs designed to meet the burgeoning needs of the state of Nevada including educating more teachers and nurses. Under his leadership, Nevada State College has grown to nearly 2,000 students and 100 full-time faculty and staff, making it the fastest growing institution in the state.
Maryanski was also awarded the Redevelopment Impact Award, along with a handful of others in the community, for his work as the driving force in Nevada State College’s effort to expand its presence in the Water Street District and throughout Henderson.
The completion of Phase II of Water Street South, which consists of six classrooms, two conference rooms, one media center, and 33 faculty and staff offices, will allow an additional 400 students to attend Nevada State College when school begins Jan. 22.
The Economic Development Awards program showcased and awarded businesses and individuals who have had a large and positive economic impact on Henderson including business relocations, expansions and the dedication of public and private sector individuals who have helped to bring businesses and jobs to the Henderson area.
The event took place at the Ritz-Carlton at Lake Las Vegas. More than 600 business leaders from the valley, including Henderson City Council members and representatives from the City Manager’s Office, Henderson’s Economic Development Division and Henderson Development Association.
Nevada State College opened its doors to students in September 2002 after the Nevada State Legislature determined the need for enhanced educational opportunities in Southern Nevada in 1997. The college currently enrolls 1,950 students.
